I’m a lifelong resident of Anchorage and graduate of East High School and UAA with a degree in Economics. I’ve been with the Anchorage Fire Department since 2002 and am currently a Captain at Fire Station 1 downtown. An unlucky stretch of four major surgeries in three years gave me a unique experience and insight into depression and how easily our lives can be turned upside down. By our very nature, firefighters are problem solvers with Type A personalities, which can make it very difficult to ask for help from our friends and family when we need it the most. The Alaska Firefighter Peer Support Network provides an avenue for me to share my experiences and help others who may be struggling with depression or potential life changing events.
